Recently I was contacted by RTE (our national broadcaster) asking if I’d like to represent ‘stay at home dads’ on a panel discussion on a program called Rearing to Go, about parental issues.

“Have you looked at Am I seriously the best person to represent stay at home dads? ”

— Daddy Poppins, upon reading the mail from RTE

Now don’t get me wrong, I was delighted to be asked but I only started my blog in September 2016 and have already had an article in the journal, an interview on Kilkenny local radio, been interviewed in the independent and now this opportunity. To be honest I never thought I’d make any national press or national broadcasters unless I went viral for all the wrong reasons (which is quite plausible, I’m very likely to put my foot in it). To say I’m delighted all this has happened with a year is an understatement.

So I checked with the Bear to make sure she could mind the kids that day and upon being given the nod I called the lady in the email and said “Why not? Daddy Poppins is in!” (I didn’t talk about myself in the 3rd person, but you get my drift)

“Oh, by the way what’s the topic?”, I enquired.

“A woman’s place is in the home”

‘Here comes me putting my foot in it’, I immediately thought.

As the old song says “There may be trouble ahead!!”

This isn’t going to be the forum for dad jokes and puns. It’ll have to be ‘Serious Poppins’, Can I do ‘Serious Poppins’?  ….No, I can do toned down Daddy Poppins though, at least I think I can.

After the phone call I was both excited and a little nervous about the whole thing but knew it would be a real life experience (plus it would be great for a bit of content). It wasn’t for a few days so I put it to the back of my mind and went about my weekend. It was BBQ weather at the time, so with the accompanying beer it was easy to forget about.

On Monday morning I got a call from a Dublin number. ‘Hmmm’, I thought, who can that be? So I picked up the phone expecting to have to tell someone that I was ‘perfectly happy with my current electricity supplier’.

“Hi, I’m just calling to confirm you are still OK for filming tomorrow”, came the cheery voice at the other end of the line.

I’d had a bit too much, mmmm ‘BBQ’ the night before and even though I’d agreed to it only a few days beforehand I hit me like a bolt out of the blue. Butterflies isn’t the word!! My stomach swirled as I confirmed the appointment. (Ok, that may have been the ‘BBQ accompaniments’ but the call can’t have helped).

I’d since learned that Ross, from the Stented Papa was also going to be there. He was filming another show for RTE Jr’s ‘Rearing to go’ on the same day (a few minutes after me). His was about having kids older in life (even though we are similar in age I suspect his tremendous ‘santa like’ beard got him that gig and left me the ‘minefield’ that is ‘a woman’s place is in the home’

So having recently been involved in Ross’s ‘He said/ She said’ series I touched base with him and we arranged to meet up beforehand for a coffee and a chat. We got on great. He’s as sounds as he comes across online. #topbloke

So like any budding bromance we held each other’s hands (figuratively) and stepped into the abyss that is a TV debut together.

As could have been expected we were both a little nervous but spent the time chatting the ears off each other and dropping #instastories to pass the time. We even got the inside scoop on a few celebrities from the ladies in make up but I’m afraid our lips are sealed.

(Ross’s make up only too 1/2 the time, but technically he only has 1/2 a face ).

So, I was called into the studio first and Ross was left in the green room (which was actually purple).

How did it go? Spill the beans!! Did you put your foot in it?

Well, I’ll let you judge for yourself.. here it is people. Daddy Poppins TV Debut (TAA DAA!!)
